As an immigrant in the U.S., do you have difficulties in work and life because of English? Do you have basic computer skills which can greatly benefit your work and life? Sponsored by Western Union, Chinese Newcomers Service Center will open new ESL and computer classes this June and July to help immigrants better adapt to the life in the US.
Western Union has always been devoted to helping the Chinese community. It offers all kinds of resources to help immigrants better adapt to the life in the U.S.. Now with Chinese Newcomers Service Center, it will launch a series of free ESL and computer classes for immigrants in the Chinese community. These intensive classes are based on daily life and work. They deal with problems new immigrants commonly have. They aim to improve the competitive strength of new immigrants in the job market in a most efficient way.
The ESL class is targeted at people whose English proficiency levels are between low beginning to low intermediate. Both English and Chinese will be used in the classroom to teach grammar, job search, everyday English and basic knowledge of finance. Listening, speaking, reading and writing will be involved to help the students understand America and its culture.
The computer class will be taught in Chinese. Students are going to learn about hardware and software, keyboarding, email, internet, and file management. Every participant is guaranteed to have one computer for learning and practice.
Class schedule:
ESL class:
First class: 6/16/2009-7/9/2009, every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 9am-12pm. Registration ends on 6/5/2009 at 5pm.
Second class: 7/6, 7/8, 7/14, 7/16, 7/21, 7/23, 7/28, 7/30 from 9am-12pm. Registration ends on 6/26/2009 at 5pm.
Please note that each ESL class can only accept 20 people at most, and those who are interested need to pass a screening before they can be accepted. After the class, all students will be referred to Chinatown Neighborhood Workforce Center for free job services.
Computer class:
First class: 6/15/2009-6/19/2009, every afternoon from 2pm-4pm. Registration ends on 6/12/2009 at 5pm.
Second class: 7/20/2009-7/24/2009, every afternoon from 2pm-4pm. Registration ends on 7/17/2009 at 5pm.
Please note each computer class can only accept 10 people. Those that come first will be served first.
Registration: All potential participants must come to 777 Stockton Street, Rm. 104, Chinese Newcomers Service Center for registration. Registration through phone calls will not be accepted.
