ARTS
EVENT: “STILL LIVES”: Unseen China and the Films of Jia Zhangke
DESCRIPTION: USF Center for the Pacific Rim presents “STILL LIVES” by Jia Zhangke. Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke (Still Life, 24 City, Unknown Pleasures) is perhaps the most significant artist working in China today. His meditative and exquisitely crafted films, both documentary and fiction probe and expose the complexities and contradictions which define China’s historical moment: migration, globalization, labor, modernization.  Jia is the leader of China’s ‘Sixth Generation’ of filmmakers, and chief chronicler of its dispossessed.  His films, like no other, capture those enormous forces, both economic and social, which are transforming China today. In this session, Chi-hui Yang, Director of the SF International Asian American Film Festival, will discuss and show clips from Jia’s films.
DETAILS: Free and open to public. Wed. 11/4. 5:45PM. USF Main Campus, Fromm Hall (Parker at Golden Gate), San Francisco.
CONTACT: RSVP recommended, please call (415) 422-6828.
