Turkmenistan is clearly determined to diversify its gas exports beyond Russia and even China. It is to go it alone in rebuilding a pipeline across the country’s south, possibly with a view to supplying Europe, and India is also being revived as a potential customer. The United Arab Emirates will meanwhile join Turkmen fuel exploration efforts. - Robert M Cutler
Nobody but washed up neo-conservatives, the Israel Lobby and full spectrum dominance fanatics can win from President Barack Obama’s attempt to sink the emergence of non-United States-centric diplomacy that Brazil and Turkey’s nuclear deal with Iran epitomizes. By drilling hard for United Nations sanctions on Iran, Obama has the political equivalent of another Gulf oil spill on his hands. - Pepe Escobar (May 27, ‘10)
Western powers sounded a dismissive tone on the fuel swap deal, with the United States pressing ahead with its drive for more sanctions on Iran and “possible military strikes”. This suggests that while Ankara and Brasilia pursue third-party mediation in the standoff, Washington and its allies have little to offer other than saber-rattling. - Sreeram Chaulia (May 27, ‘10)
An offer by the Sri Lankan government for the European Union to join in a US$3 billion development project on the island may help Colombo to secure reinstatement of a trade concession vital for the country’s garment sector and the livelihoods of the more than 300,000 people who work in it.

Since the Asian Heritage Street Celebration’s inception, fundraising for San Francisco schools has been one of its main missions. The Celebration has created a Make Some Money For Your School Raffle Fundraising Program with the goal of teaching children about community philanthropy at an early age.
The AHSC provides prizes and administrative support for students and school groups to sell raffle tickets, and all proceeds are returned to participating schools. This year approximately 40 public and private schools in San Francisco have signed up to participate.
Prizes this year include roundtrip airline tickets courtesy of Virgin America airlines, $500 to the winner’s school of choice, a flat screen TV, an autographed 49ers football, museum tickets and more! Fairgoers will have a chance to purchase tickets for $3 at the info booth on Turk and Larkin Streets. Drawings will be held all day during the sixth Annual Asian Heritage Street Celebration. Winners need not be present to win.
With state budget cuts, Lonnie Chin, principal of Spring Valley Elementary School who has been participating in the program for three years now, says the fundraising the AHSC provides for schools, is a great way to raise extra money especially with the stage budget cuts.
The raffle program is managed by the AsianWeek Foundation and accounting services are provided by Louie and Wong LLP. This year the program is sponsored by Sterling Bank and Trust.

Achieving its 79th year of existence, making it just one year younger than the Department of Veterans
Affairs, Cathay Post #384 has continuously advocated for Chinese-American veterans and their families, demanding equal treatment and recognition in the Armed Forces. Their mission for all these years has been to draw attention to Chinese American patriotism, sacrifice, and integrity to empower ethnically diverse servicemen and women, and the Chinese-American community as a whole. Developed during the introduction of the G.I. Bill to promote education and provide opportunities to bring soldier’s wives and children from China to America, Cathay Post has traditionally focused on the well-being of youth and their families in the community. It’s primary goals are focused on erecting three institutions: the First Chinese American Veteran’s Museum, permanent affordable housing, and a youth program.
The museum will educate the public and younger generations so that the true feelings and experiences of these wartime soldiers and heroes, serving as far back as the Civil War, to the current War on Terror, will not be forgotten. As they campaign to win a prime space in the War Memorial Veteran’s Building, Cathay Post #384 is seeking volunteers and financial contributions to make sure that their main effort to increase visibility and understanding happens. The non-profit, non-political Veterans organization intends for the museum to also teach visitors from around the nation and the world about the horrors of war.
This year, for the first time the Asian Heritage Street Celebration is pleased to be partnering with Cathay Post to host the Mah Jong Area, a new feature to the fair. Last October, they partnered with the AsianWeek Foundation to host a community Mah Jong night and raise awareness for hepatitis B, which affects 1 in 10 Asian and Pacific Islanders.
“Cathay Post is participating in the Asian Heritage Street Celebration because Chinese American Veterans should continue to be recognized and never forgotten by the community,” said Cathay Post First Commander Ron Lee. “Cathay Post will be hosting the MJ section to show how it is a great pastime for many seniors in our community.”
